MY SON HAS HAD A SON

My two granddaughters and three grandsons were born to my two daughters decades ago. Now, my son has had his first child, a son. The small number of folks named Granrose in the USA has increased if he keeps to the old fashioned custom of retaining his father’s name. I’ve always loved the name Granrose, that’s why I kept it after my divorce in the 1970s when it was much more fashionably feminist to do otherwise. Welcome to the family Dylan Nathaniel Granrose. I hope you have a long, happy and fruitful life.

I’ve Moved to Athens, GA

Retirement, like anything else, requires flexibility, as prior plans become ill advised. First, the water heater pipe bursting and flooding seven floors and 16 units of my midtown Atlanta condominium caused me to rethink my plan to retire to Atlanta. I sold the condo in which I had been spending weekends and summers in preparation for retirement and looked for other options.

Second, my dad’s illness and death made it preferable that I remain in the United States to assist my mother, so I decline the post for economic development in Kenya in the Peace Corps that I thought might provide a gradual transition out of academic life and into a broader social action retirement. Instead, I negotiated a gradual two year reduction in responsibility from my Berry College position as a different sort of timed adjustment to retirement focused more inside the USA.

Third, I put into effect Plan C and found a single level duplex in a wooded neighborhood in Athens GA that fit my budget, provided close shopping center conveniences. This location allows me to stay reasonably close to my daughter’s family and the grandchildren in Roswell GA and to the Atlanta airport for retirement travel. It also provides some intellectual stimulation from programs at the University of Georgia, the Georgia State Botanical Gardens, and the Georgia Museum of Art. So I sold my home in Rome and have moved to Athens in May 2014 and I’m busy exploring possible volunteer and recreational activities.

Cherry Beginning Retirement

I’ve been spending the summer helping mom clean out her home. Now that the house is sold, I have been taking trips to distribute family mementos and furniture to all of the children and grandchildren. So far I’ve made three trips from Georgia to Lancaster, two from Georgia to Indianapolis, one from Georgia to California and from Georgia to Omaha.  I should be ready to start my real retirement activities soon. I’m looking forward to getting on a regular exercise schedule, working on a family history composed of all of the family letters and Christmas letters we found in the homestead clean out, and spending time with my family.

Mom, Margaret Skromme in 90 day tryout at retirement village in Muncie IN

In January, Margaret made a temporary move to Westminster Village in Muncie Indiana to see how she likes retirement living.  I visited her for Spring Break in March and so far she seems to be doing very well . She likes the singing and exercise classes but is not too fond of the food. I took her to visit her sister Marie near Iowa City and we also visited Dad’s grave and Iowa cousins.  She will return to Lancaster in May and I will join her for the summer to help sort out the house. In the mean time, Jerry Brown is maintaining the house till we get there.
